B17 FLYING FORTRESS LANDS AT SALCOMBE DEVON
I first came across the B17 Flying Fortress landing at RAF Bolt Head Salcombe Devon when I was researching some of the history of the aerodrome and studying RAF Aerial images and noticed what looked like two four engined aircraft parked at the side of the runway, further reading confirmed three B17 aircraft returning from raid on Frankfurt in Germany were returning back across the English Channel low on fuel, engines not working, injured crew aboard managed to find Bolt Head a small advanced landing ground on the cliff top at Salcombe.
Once safely landed one B17 refueled and took off the same day the other two were in need of work so the crew were taken down to the Salcombe Hotel and when the aircraft were repaired a few day's later they took off back to their bases in Norfolk.
This short film is dedicated to those brave American Servicemen who were far from their homes.
