Sagat's stage theme in the original 'Street Fighter' attempts to evoke the soundscape of his home country, Thailand -- in particular, the dolcet tones of a traditional gong circle (a "khong wong yai" or "khong wong lek"). Unfortunately, given the limitations of programmable sound in 1987, the results here miss the mark by a smidge, resulting in a particularly shrill composition. When set as the background music for one of the most frustrating boss battles in fighting game history, the combination is quite potent.
