Bad Omen/Devilish - Clock Tower (Stage 2), copied by ear to DefleMask
14I like Bad Omen. It's frustratingly hard and I have a hard time getting any further than stage 4, but I like it anyway. The theme that plays in stage 2 also happens to be my favorite theme from the entire game, so I figured I'd test myself by trying to transcribe it to DefleMask as accurately as I could.
To help with accuracy, I listened to a VGM file so I could listen to individual channels, and I also used Gens's sound debug to get the volume levels of each channel's operators at any given time. I was so meticulous that I ended up using the effects 13xx, 14xx and 15xx for volume control instead of changing the channel volume. I'd say the hardest part was the PSG, actually, since I basically had to guesstimate the envelopes. I ended up doing the PSG last.
When I got to pattern 0B, I realized that this song had plenty of triplets. With the number of rows per pattern not being divisible by 6, I was left with two options: Start the entire thing from scratch with 96 rows or get creative. Naturally, I chose the latter because that would involve less wasted work. I tried using ECxx and EDxx to see if I could offset the triplet notes somewhat, but that didn't go too well. Took a lot of experimenting, but eventually I decided to get cheaty and use the reverb to mask the fact that I wasn't using actual triplets. At that kind of tempo, it worked.
Overall, I'd say this undertaking was pretty insightful. I can see myself doing this more often.
