Baldr Sky DiveX - Combo Video: Wanna be Crazy
A combo video for Baldr Sky DiveX... one of the coolest mech games out there. Although I suppose it's foremost supposed to be a visual novel...
Quite long in the coming for me, this is something I always wanted to do for years but just never found the initiation. Partially because the combo system is just so intricate and daunting. The main character mech having over a hundred moves is one thing, but I wanted to include combos for every ace mech in the game (you can play as dozens of the fodder mechs).
In a way, I cut corners, because I wanted to show off double-super combos for mechs that have two or more... but the Initializer super is amazing for truly stringing together some combos that can last way longer and show off all the moves.
The first song choice may be a bit silly, I just wanted it to hearken back to those good old music videos around the time, but also because I associate the song with mechs... I learned about it from a mech game, after all (S.L.A.I.).
I'll summarize how the combo system works... There's three buttons for attacks, and you can set four attacks to each. Each of those four has a contextual trigger (short range, long range, moving, during dash), but they'll also start going down a chain once you get started, even if those triggers are not met. You still have control though, such as being able to do a boost or moving attack at will, or if your combo moves you far enough away to use a long range set attack. You can only use each attack once, until your Heat resets.
Each attack uses a certain amount of Heat, a meter below the health bar. Once that fills up, you can't use any more attacks... except attacks labeled 'Charge,' which can start adding to further Heat layers, but also can last longer by using built up Heat. The Initializer super (your mech glows blue and Heat gauge turns yellow) resets your attack usage and lets you build up to two extra Heat layers.
Any attack can cancel into any attack (and usually boost), and there are moves that can bounce enemies off the ground, and all your fighting game fare. Attacks have varying momentum that can be carried over to the next move, which can be altered depending on your timing... There really is such an amount of freedom like no other, in creating combos. It's all just some of the coolest action game mechanics.
Though, it's a good thing this game doesn't even have multiplayer...
