I also think - perhaps - that Minthara dying (instantly) added to the effect.

You can completely avoid this fight, but I was doing the "save Sazza three times" achievement... plus I wanted to see the fight.

Note that if you are also doing the "save every possible teifling refugee" achievement, not a single one of them can die in the fight.

For instance, first try, just giant spiders had initiative, leapt up and killed one of them. So, to prevent this, in further tries I placed Karlach outside the Emerald grove, as bait for one spider, and put Wyll near Zelvar as bait for the other spider.

As it happens, amazingly, one firebolt into a carefully laid trap killed the lot of them.
