Plot:
In the late 15th century DR, almost a century after the events of Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, the forces of darkness are on the rise. In particular, the mind flayers have launched an invasion of Faerûn using their nautiloid flying ships, which allow them to travel between realms and take captives. The player character is one such captive, along with the human wizard Gale, the half-elf cleric Shadowheart, the high elf vampire Astarion, the human warlock Wyll, and the githyanki fighter Lae'zel. Shortly after these six are given illithid tadpoles, which are inserted into victims' brains to transform them into more mind flayers, the nautiloid they are aboard comes under attack from githyanki warriors riding dragons. The ship flees and is pursued through multiple realms before crashing in Avernus, the first of the Nine Hells. Emerging from the wreckage, the player character and their newfound companions must escape Avernus amid the perpetual war between demons and devils, as well as find a way to safely remove their parasites before they become mind flayers themselves, all while a greater conflict looms in the shadows.
