In this chapter, David and his friends make their escape from Candlekeep by way of its complicated system of catacombs and caves, where they come face to face with a veritable swarm of Doppelgangers, assuming the guises of various friends and colleagues. Once finally outside, David hightails it back to Baldur's Gate - and finds out, much to his surprise, that in the meantime Duke Entar and Scar have been assassinated, and Duke Eltan has become gravely ill. The new commander of the Flaming Fist in the city, Angelo Dosan, quickly moves to arrest David; after David insults him to his face, Angelo kills one of his party members and sentences the rest to be hanged. Only a chance encounter with a creepy killer in the dungeons helps our friends escape in the nick of time - and now they find themselves on the run from the entire Flaming Fist force in the city.
