Seeing as the first Baldur's Gate is the quintessential "modern" RPG from which many of the later developments of the genre are derived, it's fascinating to see where the influence from much older classics is still evident in Bioware's first attempt at making a D&D game. To take one example, the labyrinthine dungeon design of places like the Firewine Bridge and Ulcaster Ruin dungeons (as seen in the last few minutes of this video) have a distinctly Wizardry/Might & Magic-esque feel to them. Indeed, it's not clear to me how constructing simple mazes like this for an isometric game -where the player almost by definition has a pretty clear overview of the his or her surroundings at any given moment - could even make sense in any other way except when seen in the context of a long-standing tradition of maze-heavy first person PC RPGs.
