Drawing on influences that take in shoegaze, post punk, industrial and EBM, Powerful Recordings' latest release sees Barium Network marks his return to the label with one of its most adventurous outings yet - a 3 track, atmospheric dive into the darker side of electronic music that brings the producer's tastes together in unexpected and unique ways.

Following on from high end offerings by TRAXSHNN, Eldon Audio, Demetae and Sted Mork, Barium Network's 'Stillness Through Fire' EP opens with the appropriately named 'Necrocracy'. Skittish percussion, suspended strings and swathes of distortion set a darkly unsettling tone before a dialed-in, arpeggiated bassline pushes things into more aggressive territory. The fractured rhythms turn into a four-to-the-floor stomp that ratchets up the intensity as slurring strings create a palpable sense of unease. This is morbid club tackle for dancefloors that rave in sackcloth.

The initial tide of aggression recedes when the ethereal broken techno of 'Stillness Through Fire' starts up. Ghostly voices and a thick fog of sliding pads, fed through layers of distortion blanket the track like a dense blizzard. An ungodly low end and clattering drums that sound like hammers in a steel mill propel the track skyward, while the lead motif reappears throughout to ground us with a quiet sense of hopefulness.

EP closer 'Interstate Lines' pushes Barium Network into unexplored territory, casting off the shackles of genre definitions to deliver a post punk inspired pastiche of varied styles. Withdrawn vocals sit just behind the heft of hollowed out kicks and trembling bass. The guitar, taken from James Bowles' 'Eerie's Dog', weaves around in the background, occasionally bursting through like bright flashes of sunlight. Things build into an apocalyptic crescendo as the moody vocals, shrill synths and guitars layer up for a widescreen, action-packed crossbreed of spoken word punk and metronomic, mangled, industrialised noise.
