Barry Sutton of The La's & Cast - Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads - Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus
32This is the legendary Barry Sutton of The La's & Cast fame, doing a live acoustic version of Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads.T
The track was from Barry's performance for The Beat Club event at Harringtons Bar Liverpool on Saint Patrick's day 2018.
This was a very impromptu recording while out and about in Liverpool city centre. I went along to The Beat Club event, run by my friend Peter Jackson, just to have a few Guinness's and listen to Barry and the other artists. Because I had the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus on me, as I had been testing it's video and audio capabilities earlier on, I decided to record some stuff with it.
This track was recorded in 4K UHD 30 FPS using the rear camera and then I edited the footage in a 1080P project, which allowed me a certain amount of latitude to do post zooming and re-framing without exceeding the optical resolution of the recording.
The audio on this track was also done using the internal stereo microphones of the Galaxy S9+
While it's obviously not the last word in either picture quality or sound quality, it does show what can be achieved when you've got a good camera on a smartphone to hand.
Despite any misgivings, I think it'd be hard to argue against the point that you simply can't beat the convenience of a smartphone for capturing on the fly moments.
I also recorded a few more of Barry's songs on the day with a Rode VideoMicro that I had in my pocket. I'll see if Barry will let me use one or two of those tracks to show how the VideoMicro sounded.
