A playthrough of Acclaim's 1991 license-based platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy, Bart Simpson's Escape from Camp Deadly.

Games based on The Simpsons cartoons have always had something of a dubious reputation. Some of them have been fantastic (The Simpsons Game), some have been absolute trash (Virtual Bart), and the rest tend to be regarded as mediocre and disposable cash-ins, Escape from Camp Deadly included.

I, for one, do like Escape from Camp Deadly quite a bit. As a kid, I loved Bart vs. the Space Mutants on the NES. It was not perfect by a long shot, but I always did (and still do) really enjoy it. Escape from Camp Deadly was done by the same development team at Imagineering, and there are some clear connections between the two. A buddy of mine got this for Christmas when it was new, and I borrowed it often from him, and played it until I could finish it in my sleep.

Though it got blasted by many publications at the time, I think that Escape from Camp Deadly was a great adaptation, especially considering how early of a GB title it was. It resembles Space Mutants in a few ways - the graphics' style is similar, and the music was pulled directly from the NES game.

But while this is a simple left-to-right platforming affair that avoids the somewhat obtuse, puzzle-centered trappings of the NES title, the controls are far easier to handle and the difficulty level was dropped significantly. If you were ever someone who wanted to like Space Mutants and just couldn't get handle the difficulty level, you might do well to try this one out.

The graphics are fairly detailed with large sprites, and they do a solid job of evoking the feeling of the show, as do the smattering of voice samples - not a common thing to find on a GB cart! I always loved making Lisa scream, "Stop it, Bart!" when you nail her in the head with a boomerang. Too bad she isn't around when Bart has 'liver pizza' as his current weapon!

There are a few tough spots when the game swarms you with random bad guys, but overall, it's an easy and short game with little to frustrate you throughout.

While you may or may not agree with me, I think it was an enjoyable title. Nintendo Power originally gave it a rating of 3.4 out of 5, and I'd say they were right on target.

*This is a new playthrough to replace my original recording in my Game Boy playlist. It was recorded in Retroarch using the DMG shader to mimic the look of the Game Boy's LCD screen.
