ABOUT THE STORY:
"Bartleby, the Scrivener" by Herman Melville is a short story set in a law office on Wall Street, where the narrator, an elderly lawyer, hires a new scrivener named Bartleby. Initially, Bartleby is industrious and efficient, but he gradually begins to refuse tasks with his signature phrase, "I would prefer not to." Despite the lawyer's attempts to understand and accommodate Bartleby, the scrivener's passive resistance escalates, ultimately leading to his dismissal and tragic demise. The story explores themes of isolation, the dehumanizing effects of capitalism, and passive resistance. Melville's portrayal of Bartleby's quiet rebellion against meaningless work and rigid office culture has inspired various adaptations and interpretations, including the cult classic movie "Office Space," which humorously critiques corporate life and employee dissatisfaction. This video features clips from the 1970 British daramaticv adaption directed by Anthony Friedman.
