Battle Brothers - Introduction, Review & Tipps for a Unique Indie Game Everyone Should Know
Hello and welcome to #playinghardball
Here you will find an introduction, review and tipps for the turn-based tactical role-playing game BattleBrothers (including Lindworm and Of Flesh and Faith expansions).
It was developed and published by independent Hamburg/Germany based Overhype Studio on PC in 2017.
The player manages a band of mercenaries that in the beginning often consist of drunkards, criminals and other misfits and sees to their survival in a harsh world that shows the true and gruesome face of medieval warfare. In time this company will evolve into a professional mercenary outfit. The player builds a reputation for this business of sellswords, makes friends and allies and also enemies where only one thing is clear: everythin might change in this world, but not the coin you get for a contract.
The game is set in a medieval world that evolves quickly from an unforgiving low-fantasy setting inspired by medieval Germany full of brigands, hunger and despair to a world of roaming undead and hordes of monsters. It is further inspired by game titles like the original UFO: Enemy Unkown, Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat and Jagged Alliance.
The game features a procedurally created open world, unique simplistic graphics and gripping sound effects and music. Combat is challenging. The player needs to account for factors like terrain, morale, exhaustion and the range of sight and arms. Even without aspects like permadeath (optional but recommended) the game makes for very exciting battles wher ethe mercenaries are often just one mistake away from death or severy mutilation.
The game was well received and classified as a "must-know"-gaming title.
In this video I will introduce the game, outfit a mercenary force and play a first phase of the game. I will also give advice on how to create an effective band of battle brothers and after some spoiler warnings will give further tipps for optimized gameplay.
I recommend this game and rate it as a really good and enjoyable game of 82/100, provided you do not just play the core game but get the DLCs. If you like exciting tactical turned based combat and an open game world then this is most likely a game for you.
