Battleborn (Open Beta)#6: Mushrooms n' Multiplayer!
I had no idea that the competitive multiplayer in this game was that of a MOBA. I admit, that completely caught me off guard, though I quickly came to like it, and in hindsight, can see the components of it that were introduced as I played the story missions.
Simply put, THIS is what I'd keep playing this game for if I were to purchase it. The single player and co-op modes, while certainly a positive inclusion in a market of such stripped down, single-approach games as are now the norm, just doesn't hold up to the standard Gearbox have set for themselves in the past, and I couldn't help feeling as though it would make a chore of itself rather quickly.
I almost feel as though they've flown a little too close to a sun of their own creation in that regard. All in all though, I am impressed with Battleborn, critical as I am of it, and I hope it does well, as I'd certainly like to see more from Gearbox in the future. Color me concerned for that possibility, however, as much of its stiffest competition comes from the free-to-play market, like DOTA 2, League of Legends, and Smite, and at a full-price cost for release, I'm just not sure this game can compete with that level of accessibility well enough to keep on its feet.
