Livestream: DOOM (Open Beta) - I MISS JOHN CARMACK
Color me concerned about DOOM's ability to deliver upon the legacy it's channeling. Clearly, it has all the hallmarks of a classic arena shooter, from its smooth controls and low recoil, to the health and power-ups scattered around the level, and its fragfest approach to combat.
Compared to the classics, it is a little sluggish, and I can't help finding it aesthetically generic, though I am glad to see an element of customization, and therefore progression, added to the formula. I just can't say it was enough to keep me compelled to play for long.
I can only hope that the single player campaign and SnapMap level editor planned for the consumer version of the game give it a little more life and longevity. As it is, the multiplayer, dull and repetitive as it is - even with its after-match incentives - isn't selling it for me, and I can only cautiously recommend it to the most diehard of retro arena shooter fans at the moment.
