Battleborn (Open Beta) #3: Concerning Character Viability (End of Mission I: The Algorithm)
I consider this episode less a condemnation on the game as a whole and more upon its current accessibility for players who might prefer to play the story mode alone.
One could make the argument that one simply shouldn't do so, that it's clearly intended for co-op, to which I'll counter-argue that the game allows for it, and should therefore treat it with the same level of care and import as any other mode or approach to gameplay. That's just how proper game design should work, as far as I'm concerned; if an approach is offered to players, follow through on it.
Clearly, a melee-centric character isn't an advisable choice for such a play style, at least for this mission, and while that's fine in and of itself, I still feel as though the game should give one some indication as to how advanced or viable any given character is FOR solo play.
I admit, I - very apparently - made a poor choice in character selection for the purposes of attempting this mission alone, and I suffered for it. Intellectually, I realize that, short of some menu perhaps advising me against that, that isn't entirely the game's fault. Still, it is difficult to disassociate the frustration of this experience from the game as a first impression on an emotional level, so...forgive a somewhat critical tone against the game throughout this episode.
