Similar to its predecessors, Battlefield 2042 is a multiplayer-focused first-person shooter. As the game is set in the near future, it features futuristic weapons and gadgets such as turrets and drones that can be used, as well as vehicles that the player can control. Players can request to air-drop vehicles to any location. The game introduces a "Plus" system which allows players to customize their weapons on the spot. The class system was significantly overhauled and removed the four defined classes from the previous game; instead, players can take control of a specialist who falls under the four traditional Battlefield gameplay classes Assault, Engineer, Medic, and Recon. This character can use any weapons and gadgets that the player has unlocked. Each operator has their own unique skills and gadgets. For example, one specialist, Emma "Sundance" Rosier, is equipped with a wing suit, while another, Maria Falck, is equipped with a healing gun.[3] The destructive evolution and environment of Battlefield 4 returns in Battlefield 2042, and extreme weather effects such as tornadoes and sandstorms can affect gameplay. The game features seven maps at launch, including 'Breakaway', the largest map in the history of the Battlefield franchise.

The game has three main game modes. "All-Out Warfare" includes "Breakthrough" and "Conquest", the two principal modes of the series. In Conquest, two teams battle each other for control points; Once all control points in a sector are captured, the team controls the sector. In Breakthrough, one team must try to seize the other team's control points, while the other team must defend it. Both modes can be played with and against AI-controlled players. The Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S versions support matches of up to 128 players, while the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions support up to 64 players. For the first time in the series, Battlefield 2042 brings support for cross-platform play with versions of Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. While the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions also support the feature, it is limited to players on the two platforms mentioned above.
