Like Crytek's previous game, Far Cry, Crysis is a first-person shooter game with many ways to achieve goals. Players control a special forces soldier codenamed Nomad. The player's weapons can be customized without stopping the flow of time, for example changing the shooting mode, changing the scope, or adding silencers.

Players are also able to choose from various modes in the Nomad military "Nanosuit" that draw power from the suit's energy. When the suit's energy is depleted, none of the modes can be used and the player is more susceptible to damage before the suit is recharged. One of four modes to choose from: Armor parries damage and recharges suits faster; Strength allows for stronger hand-to-hand combat, the ability to throw objects and enemies with lethal force, higher jumps, more steady aim, and reduced weapon recoil; Speed increases running and swimming speed, as well as other forms of movement such as reloading weapons; and Cloak, which makes Nomad almost completely invisible and suppresses movement noise.

The suit's integral face mask has its own HUD, displaying typical data including tactical maps, health, current energy level, and weapon information. The display is electronic, displayed in-game through things like boot readings and visual distortion during abnormal operation. A particularly useful utility is the binoculars function, which allows players to zoom in and remotely mark enemies and vehicles electronically, thereby tracking their movements on a tactical view.

Players can engage enemies in a variety of ways; using stealth or aggression, bullets or non-lethal tranquilizers, long-range rifles or short-range weapons, and so on. Enemy soldiers use tactical maneuvers and work as squads. All soldiers will respond to noise caused by players, including using signal beacons to call for reinforcements. If the player has not been detected in the area, the enemy will show a relaxed behavior, but if they know the player, they will draw a weapon and become aggressive.
