Ratchet & Clank's game features a mix of platforming, action and role-playing elements presented in a third-person perspective, focusing on using the unique weapons and gadgets Ratchet acquires during each game. Ratchet starts each game with a versatile Omniwrench for melee attacks, but new weapons are available by completing missions or purchasing them through a weapons vendor. Most weapons have a limited amount of ammo, requiring the player to use ammunition efficiently to avoid running out of firepower. Ammunition can be replenished from vendors or by breaking crates scattered around the level. In most later games, weapons can be upgraded through repeated use of the weapon and by purchasing weapon modifications. The weapons in each game can range from standard weapon archetypes like machine guns or sniper rifles to unique weapons like transform guns and decoy launchers. Typically, weapon sets are a mix of new weapons for the current title, and weapons returned from previous titles. In the case of Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal, weapons returned from previous games can be purchased or save files from previous games can be used to obtain them for free and/or at a reduced price.

In addition to weapons, Ratchet gets a lot of gadgets with various uses. Several gadgets are required to travel in some levels, such as the "Grind Boots" which allow Ratchet to grind on rails, or the "Swingshot" (reusable portable grappling hook) which allows him to grapple with targets and swing across gaps. Other gadgets can be used in battle as a means to distract the enemy, and others are needed to unlock certain doors and thus continue the mission; in this case, the player usually has to solve the puzzle minigame in order to successfully use the gadget and unlock the door.

Each game is broken up into a series of missions that take place on multiple planets across the galaxy. While most objectives must be completed in a specific order to advance the main story, other objectives are optional but can yield rewarding rewards. After players complete a mission on a planet, they can usually return to the previous planet they have visited to try a mission they were unable to complete before. In addition to objectives based on platform and weapon elements, missions may include minigames such as various races and arena battles. Usually, one or two of these minigames should be played as part of the main story, but further optional challenges can be taken for greater rewards, usually in the form of "bolts", units of currency used throughout the game. There are also missions focused on Clank, often controlling a set of small robots called Gadgebots to travel through areas Ratchet can't. The Clanks gameplay portion of the major titles after Tools of Destruction is also much more experimental in their gameplay mechanics.
