1Senegalese tirailleur soldiers are dispatched to aid in the liberation of France from German domination in the late summer of 1944, following the Allied landings in Normandy during Operation Dragoon. One of these soldiers is the young recruit Deme Cisse, who upon his arrival in France encounters fellow soldier and older brother Idrissa. Deme, however, swiftly encounters prejudice from the French troops, with the Senegalese being forbidden from fighting on the frontlines and instead given the chore of stacking sandbags, among other menial labour. The Senegalese are then permitted to go in and take part in an assault on a well fortified German position by taking out several nearby anti-aircraft guns.
