Jordan Weissman, creator of BattleTech, is back! We had the pleasure of sitting down with the man himself to discuss BattleTech and the upcoming 2018 BattleTech strategy game and you can enjoy the whole chat in a four part interview.
In this first [1/4] part we start from the beginning: how the science fiction wargame we so much love came to be. How BattleTech timeline evolved as time went by and how the new 2018 wargame returns back to the roots, to the original setting.
And what kind of game it is going to be, living in the periphery, with the minor factions and warlords, with their own political and military agendas.
Jordan Weissman tells:
"One of the reasons we chose to set the game in the periphery, with those smaller political units and the small band kingdoms, is because we could exert more influence there as a as a small unit."
About the starting point:
"It needed to really feel like BattleTech, right? Even though we knew we were going to have to do some updating to some of the different mechanics. At the end of the day we wanted to make sure that an old loyal follower and player of the table top game would come away feeling that it felt like BattleTech, that my tactics worked and all my experience from over the years are still valid, you know. That was kind of number one. Number two was that the lure of world. We wanted to make sure we really respected it, like we did with Shadowrun. We weren't going in to change big things or rewriting the story significant way. We wanted to make sure that we respected the 35 years of storytelling."
"One of the challenges we've had is that the light and the medium mechs didn't really feel like the roles that they did in the fiction. They really didn't play their role, you know, so that was one of the big things for us, to really make sure that those guys had useful and identifiable roles to play on the battlefield."
