Battletoads - Game Boy - Full Playthrough
0A complete playthrough of Battletoads on the Game Boy. Released in 1991 this isn't a port or a cut down version of the NES title. There is a version of the original on Game Boy titled "Battletoads in Ragnarok's World" but this one is a completely different game, although some parts are obviously inspired by the original.
It's not as relentlessly hard as the original either but is still a very tough game. Some of the level design feels incredibly cheap and unfair, as is the case for a lot of Rare titles from this period. Most of the nine stages can be beaten in a couple of minutes but it can take hours to master them. There are also a few glitches, some game breaking and the controls aren't particularly tight or responsive either. I just about managed to beat this with absolutely no lives or continues remaining. The final boss I tanked my way through because I'd had so little chance to practice him. What you see here is my one and only time beating this game.
That said It has some nice effects for a Game Boy title including background and foreground layered scrolling. The gameplay also mixes it up with platforming, beat em up, vehicle and shoot em up sections. It's clear that some corners were cut though. Rare were very good coders but they often knocked games out so fast that some aspects of quality control did suffer as a result.
Anyway I'm pleased I can tick this one off the beaten games list. I'm going through a lot of Rare titles at the moment so watch this channel for more playthroughs of them.
