When I first went online in '98, I played Battlezone 98 deathmatch under the alias Patriarch, and for a small while had joined the clan Angry Angels.

Battlezone 98 holds a special place to me because it was an interesting study in game balance and what you should NOT put in a multiplayer strategy game. Battlezone 2 tried to fix the issues but for me made the game slow, boring, and removed the game's punch, which inspired me to think of what a game I would like to play would be like. I have been slowly piecing elements together, but development-wise I am really only at the jet unit dogfighting stage. Check out the kilroy987 channel for development updates.

I was happy to find out that Battlezone has been redone to run on current day systems under the name Battlezone 98 Redux. It's available on Steam. Many AI and general bug fixes along with some graphical additions have been incorporated, although the models themselves still look very polygonal - which frankly I have no problem with. The gameplay is still intact, and that's what matters most.

I logged on and tried out some Deathmatch. The lobby was pretty empty, but after I made a game, a few people joined. Hopefully I'll play more often. Back in '98, I became disenchanted with the elitism that became rampant after the nicer people moved on to other games. It didn't help that being new on the internet and seeing all the new opportunities there made me try in various ways to make some sort of name for myself. The lure of anonymity was strong.
