I figured I would revisit my roots of video gaming before I dive into Doom on the PS4. I got my first PC in '93 and enjoyed XWing, TIE Fighter, Doom 1 and 2, Descent, etc. I was never much into longplay RPG games.

Replaying Doom after so long of a break really got me back in contact with my prior gaming instincts, and I can see how video gaming today depends on spectacle almost more than scratching a real gaming itch. Uncharted 4 is more spectacle, Dark Souls is a punishing experience for the hard core gamer, and Just Cause 3 is a shallow playground that allows you to fiddle with its aspects and dig for some depth as you play around with the AI.

Doom 2 got so many things right. Even the heavy pixelization of the graphics seems to serve the presentation of evil very well. Many have tried to follow the formula but for me never came close. The people at id really knew what they were doing when they made Doom and Quake.
