LESSON 6 KEY TERMS:
STEPS: The different parts of the battle phase. Certain actions can only be taken during each step, and the steps must be done in a particular order.
START STEP: The first step in the battle phase. This step begins as soon as the player enters their battle phase, and serves as a standby period where either player can activate effects before battling begins.
BATTLE STEP: The battle step begins if the turn player decides to attack. During the battle step the turn player selects one monster they control and uses it to declare an attack either against one of their opponent's monsters, or directly if the opponent has no monsters.
DIRECT ATTACK: An attack made directly against an opponent's life points. Usually this can only be done when an opponent has no monsters on their field, though some cards have effects that let monsters declare direct attacks regardless.
REPLAY: A replay happens when a monster enters or leaves the field after an attack is declared. The player who made the attack can reconsider their attack and choose to continue, to attack the new target, to not attack, or to attack with a different monster. If the attacking player chooses a different monster, they can not attack with their first monster for the rest of that turn.
DAMAGE STEP: The damage step begins once an attack is successfully made. During this step the players determine the results of the battle. This includes calculating all the damage that is done, determining which monsters are sent to the graveyard, and resolving all the effects triggered by monsters being sent to the graveyard. Once all these things are done the turn player can either go straight to the end step, or go back to the battle step if they want to declare a subsequent attack.
DAMAGE CALCULATION: The point in the damage step where the players determine how much life point damage is done to each player and then inflict it.
END STEP: When the turn player is done attacking with all their monsters this turn they enter the end step. The end step is the end of the battle phase and serves as another standby period before Main Phase 2, where effects that activate at the end of the battle phase can occur.
