A playthrough of Bandai's 1992 light gun shooter for the Super Nintendo, Bazooka Blitzkrieg.
Played on the expert mode. You don't get a proper ending on the novice or pro difficulty levels.
Bazooka Blitzkrieg was one of the first third-party games to support the Super Scope light gun peripheral. It came out just in time for the 1992 holiday season, right about the same time as Kemco's X-Zone.
In this five stage blast-a-thon, you play as a bazooka wielding ninja (no joke, just check out that ending!) who has to take on an army of androids that have gone bezerk after terrorists infected the AI's mainframe with a virus. So yeah, it's pretty much Terminator 2, but with ninja. Could you ask for anything more 90s than that?
It feels a like an arcade game. Your gun can fire a constant stream of shots without ever having to reload and you're fed a regular supply of missiles, so you're well equipped to handle the constant stream of psychotic robots that fly at you from every angle, as well as the occasional boss that requires you to pelt its flashing weak point. It's simple and straightforward, and that's what I like the most about it. It's also way more forgiving than your average rail shooter: you get unlimited credits *and* stage checkpoints!
The game looks pretty nice. It suffers from the same slightly washed out look that most of the Super Scope games do, but it moves smoothly, the enemies are big, and it has some nice parallax scrolling going on in the backgrounds. I'm a big fan of the music, too. It's corny, but the constant barrage of orchestra hits and synthy melodies suit the game perfectly.
The game overall comes across as a bit generic, but I never found it to be anything but good ol' fashioned, mindless entertainment. Bazooka Blitzkrieg is a shining example of how a game doesn't need to be original to be a lot of fun.
(And you're a ninja with a bazooka! That is so awesome.)
