Ghostbusters II (Game Boy) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Activision's 1990 license-based action game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Ghostbusters II.
Though the US never saw a release of HAL's New Ghostbusters II on the NES, we did get the next best thing. This handheld cart shares a lot in common with its big brother on the console (https://youtu.be/Uugm7Da-qwg ), and it's a much better game than Imagineering's American NES Ghostbusters II game (https://youtu.be/aCsdzo3NMTk )
Ghostbusters II is a top-down maze-style shooter. You take up control of two of the Ghostbusters and run around the stages, each based on a location from the movie, wiping out all of the lurking phantasms. To defeat them, your main character has to hold the ghost in a proton beam while his partner tosses out the trap to capture it, and once all of the ghosts have been cleaned up you move on to the next area.
There are also a few power-ups strewn about, including a slime cannon and temporary invincibility, and you can swap out your partner with any other Ghostbusters you find hanging out in the area.
For a such a relatively simple looking Game Boy game, the graphics are fantastic on this one. You can immediately tell who's who from the squat sprites. Who would've thought that so much character could be captured in so few pixels? The backgrounds also look great with lots of little environmental details scattered through. The music is light and fun, too.
The controls are easy and responsive, and even though the AI partner gets stuck on the scenery a bit too often, it's usually not to difficult to steer him around obstacles. It would be nice if you could fire through each other and the walls like in the NES version, but this one's slower pace helps to make up for the difference.
If the idea of bringing down Vigo the Capathian on the go sounds good to you, give Ghostbusters II a try. You won't likely find a better handheld Ghostbusters game than this!
(And how could you not love the way chibi-Sigourney Weaver screams "Oh! Baby" as her son is kidnapped?
...or that awkward ending text? Keep on bustin'!)
