Pearl Abyss is attempting to solve two issues. The event based economy and the issue that they introduced with Valencia Part 1. When they changed the game's progression philosophy. Originally with the +15 system endgame gear was attainable by the average player with enough time invested. Even the introduction of Liverto and boss gear was attainable with some effort. However, PEN gear is not attainable, the progression philosophy for Black Desert went from a WoW-esque style where players were encouraged to work hard for a few weeks or even a few months to earn the best gear possible to a system where progression was made into an ongoing goal at all times.
This philosophy isn't a problem when gear scaling is toned down. However, the difference between even a "small" amount of gearscore in Black Desert is immense. This combined with the ongoing progression means that the difference between a new player and vets who have been playing for years is continuously growing. Pearl Abyss has been attempting to solve this issue repeatedly over the past year. The first attempt was the Asula set introduced in the summer of 2017. From there they've made numerous changes to attempt to bridge this gap including:
Capotia Items (Ring, Earring, and once 64 becomes possible Necklace)
Raining Enhancements giving PRI and DUO accessory drops
More Accessory Boxes from Attendance Rewards some months (And Valks rewards)
Terrmian DUO Crescent Ring
Softcap Set from Nodewar event (1 week only)
From this we can see that Pearl Abyss is actively attempting to see how much free gear they can give new players to catch up without driving away the veterans of the game. This is definitely a good sign as games where only the truly hardcore can compete see their playerbases dwindle rapidly leaving behind only a small subset of hardcore players. Fighting game enthusiasts are some of the most familiar with this as it's a common phenomenon with new fighting games. New games will start with large player bases, however, after launch the game will continuously shed players. Due to the nature of fighting games the requirements for entry into competitive play is immense for players starting a couple months into the game's lifespan. More casual games can somewhat ignore this (Smash Bros is a great example) as the game is still very fun to play with a group of friends who are all mostly at a low level of gameplay.
Fighting games
- After launch, only the hardcore players stay. New techs and combos are continuously discovered and practiced by players.
- This acts as a barrier to entry for newer players as they need to learn all the techs, movesets, and tricks to compete with the vets in addition to getting good at the game.
Card Games
- The longer the game exists the more cardsets exist in standard and the more cards new players need to unlock in order to become competitive.
The same is true in Black Desert. It was fine when the limit for gear was +15 pre-Valencia part 1. New players could catch up within a couple weeks and then upgrade to Liverto and later bossgear.
By adding better and better welfare gear and events that give already upgraded gear, Pearl Abyss can allow new players to catch up to the baseline necessary gear while not giving them the ability to stomp veterans as their gear will still be worse (In this event new players will still be missing 2 accessories, and their armour/weapons) and they'll lack both the game knowledge and skills (both gaming and literal levels) required to exploit their new gearscore.
In Black Desert however, new players are instantly thrust into competition with top level players as soon as they leave the Olvia server (And even before that with returning players). There's no option to PvP against opponents of similar gearscore in a real PvP environment such as nodewars. When your guild accidentally drops onto the same node as Baka or BlackRose all you can really do is laugh at your own misfortune. Players must get to a high level of gearscore to be able to truly participate in nodewars without feeling like a liability. 500+ is pretty much the bare minimum to be a decent player even in t1 nodewars.
Adding real items over the Capotia/Kydict items also make these events great for veteran players as they can choose to either sell the extra item for silver, or use it too attempt to create an even better item with a backup already prepared. Unlike the Capotia set these items have real value and contribute to the economy.
