Before & After Breakdown of CGI Behind "Rise of Skywalker"
"The Rise of Skywalker" is the last film in the Epic Saga, that has captured the hearts of millions of fans, all over the world. Although with so many fans, it's clear that you are never going to please them all. Some critics even claimed that the film felt like, rather than "aiming to please", it was aiming "not to disappoint!" One place it certainly didn't disappoint was in VFX. ILM, Ghost VFX, Virtuous, Yannix, Whiskeytree, Stereo D, Important Looking Pirates, and Hybride all got together to create something rather special.

Hybride
Hybride provided 323 shots and their work was mainly focused on Planet Kijimi.
The streets of Kijimi were filmed on a large set built in the Pinewood Studios backlot.
The Hybride team had to extend what was shot and create a city based on Artwork, structures, and scenic detail that ILM provided them.
In the C-3PO deconstruction scene, Hybride artists modified the C-3PO CG asset to fit the suit used in the scene, they then generated C-3PO's missing legs and the wires at the back of his head.
Because of the use of practical puppets, the Hybride team had to remove puppeteers, rods, and do some digital eye enhancements. they also had to remove the reflections of cameras and crew members that appeared on C-3PO's shiny suit.
Industrial Light And Magic
As Lucasfilm's own VFX house, it was pretty obvious that ILM would be doing the majority of the work. After the death of Carrie Fisher in 2016, Lucasfilm found themselves with the awkward task of finishing Leia's story without Carrie Fisher.
The director didn't just want a digital version of Leia, he wanted Carrie Fisher, so the team decided to use Outtakes from "The Force Awakens" and "The Last Jedi" and script the scenes according to the footage they had. They then used only the facial element of Carrie and both costume and hair were Digital. For the flashback training scenes, with young Luke and Leia, Raw footage from the original films was digitally inserted over the faces of stand-ins.
Seaside Fight
For this scene ILM had to develop a new CG Water System to allow artists to control and manipulate the huge volume of water. ILM artists simulated 134 million gallons of water surrounding the ruins of the "Death star".
On set, water cannons were used to soak the actors and make them feel as if waves were crashing around them. However, water cannons don't behave like waves, so ILM had to remove the "Real" water blasts, and replace them with "digital" water that did behave correctly.
Final Battle
The final battle scene involved the combination of interior set pieces with fully CG exteriors and digital explosions, the creation of a CG lightning system designed to target hundreds of ships at once with bolts of random shape and duration, and a total 16,000 digital ships, which took over 8 million hours of processing time to render.
