Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO Gaming Headset Modification With Gooseneck Boom Arm Microphone
Best Custom Gaming Headset Mic? My Hack for Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO and Microphone Modification
Just a demonstration for my YouTube buddy, Jon, Lensman Online https://www.youtube.com/c/lensman2online/videos in which I give an example of adding a microphone modification to my Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro headphones.
Because I've never been very happy with the audio quality of gaming headsets and never found any with a good microphone on them, I decided to build my own gaming headset with excellent headphone speaker audio quality and also very good microphone audio quality.
I used the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro as my headphones for modifying, hacking and turning into my moded gaming headset. The DT 770 Pro are in my opinion the best HiFi headphones for anywhere around their price. They have a very 'sweet' and pleasing 'HiFi' type sound, without overdoing the upper mid response and have a very capable and uncluttered bass end which really lends them to be used for gaming headphones.
I added a 3.5mm female TRRS jack socket in place of the usual permanently wired headphone cable. I then add a 3.5mm female TRS jack socket to the front of the left earpiece/headphone cup.
I wired the the left and right headphone speakers to the main TRRS socket in a way that the headphones could be used with either a TRS or TRRS jack cable for normal stereo headphone use without the microphone being plugged in. I then wired the TRS mic input socket to the main TRRS socket so that when a microphone is connected it connects to the main TRRS socket and therefore passes audio to gaming console or audio destination.
This moded gaming headset works perfectly with my Xbox Series X and S game controllers, my Nvidia Shield game controller and my Sony PS4 game controller, as they all have the analogue TRRS input/output jack socket on them. In fact it works with any gaming peripheral or game console that has TRRS for its mic in and headphone out and will work with any setup that allows for separate microphone input and headphone output.
As you can see in my video I use this moded gaming headset with my computer as the microphone for OBS studio and also to monitor what the PC is doing. I do this by using a TRRS splitter cable, one end goes to the headphone socket on my Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD USB audio interface and the other end, the microphone cable, goes into a RODE VXL+ adapter and then into an XLR mic input on the Behringer UMC2020HD. The RODE VXL+ is used to convert the 48 volt phantom power from the Behringer to a voltage of about 6V that is more suitable for the mic. This setup will also work with any PC gaming system
Lastly, I modified a cheap TRS gaming headset replacement boom mic by swapping its microphone capsule with one that I liked from another device. The original mic capsule in the boom is actually really nice, I will demonstrate that at some point.
Let me know in the comments what you think of the headset and the sound of the mic.
