I'm pretty sure this is the biggest possible leap in the game.

Here's how it's done. You can make the biggest possible leap as early as you get Grandpa the whale, which is exactly what I do (this is a different playthrough with the original translation). A requirement to make this possible is to have Bow at lv. 1 until this point in the game. He must be killed off in the beginning of the game, killed off while raiding Trout's house together with Ryu, not alone by himself (he somehow gained 3 exp here, I'm not sure why) and the difference between Ryu's level must be 36+.

The party giving us the most experience is the party of three K. Sludges on the monster island, situated north from the main continent.

One of these lethal enemies with 1K HP, 500 speed, armed with Death spells and all-around killer stats gives 7000 experience when defeated. A party of three gives 21000.

BoF2's battle system encourages using lower-levelled party members by offering experience boosts to them when the battle is over. For example, if the hero is 5 levels stronger than Rand, Rand will gain 8% extra experience. The maximum bonus is 56%, given when the difference is 35 levels or more.

My party is weak at this point, with no good equipment, skills and fusions, so it takes me a bit to actually win the battle.

Bow receives 29367 experiences and gains 19 levels. You can see how his stats change and how many spells he learns at once.

According to my calculations, he ought to have received around 3K more experience, but where that 3K went I have no clue. Either way, that extra 3K would be insufficient for another level.
