"Bionic Commando" for the Game Boy, a remake of the 1988 NES game with the same title, is a side-scrolling action-adventure game developed by Capcom and released in 1992. Set in a dystopian future, the game follows the protagonist, Ladd Spencer, a commando equipped with a bionic arm, as he embarks on a mission to rescue ally Super Joe from an enemy army bent on unleashing project Albatross.

Gameplay mechanics revolve around the use of Ladd's bionic arm, which serves as both a weapon and a tool for navigation. Players must master the arm's grappling mechanics to swing across gaps, ascend vertical shafts, and defeat enemies. This deliberate gameplay sets the game apart but comes with a learning curve. It features detailed character sprites and environments, and its design emphasizes verticality, requiring players to use Ladd's bionic arm to swing and traverse through levels filled with obstacles and enemies.

The non-linear overworld offers freedom to fly your helicopter between enemy-infested main stages and "neutral territory" side stages for bonuses. Enemy aircraft add suspense, leading to special encounter stages if you collide mid-flight. The gameplay is divided into several stages, each culminating in a boss battle against powerful adversaries. Completing stages unlocks new abilities and upgrades for Ladd's bionic arm, enhancing gameplay variety and providing a sense of progression. Later levels can become quite complex, and the lack of stage maps can be frustrating.

There are some improvements compared to the NES version, such as enhanced boss fights and a password system. Despite its challenging difficulty and occasionally repetitive level design, "Bionic Commando" offers engaging gameplay and a compelling storyline, making it a great and unique game.
