"Rambo" for the NES, released in 1987 by Acclaim Entertainment, is a thrilling action-adventure game that immerses players in the world of the well-known character of John Rambo. Drawing inspiration from the movie, the game is set across a series of side-scrolling levels. Players are initially presented with the choice to accept the mission or remain in prison, a decision enforced by Colonel Trautman's repetitive insistence until acceptance.

Upon exploring the base and meeting key characters, players venture into the jungle armed initially only with a knife. The narrative progresses through encounters with Co, a riverboat subquest, and a pivotal confrontation at the enemy camp. The gameplay perspective even briefly shifts to Co before returning to Rambo. players must navigate the Vietnamese wilderness to locate objectives, receiving vague clues from characters within the game. The game's layout occasionally confounds, with looping pathways, dead ends and occasional one-way pathways.

Players will be facing an array of enemies including bees, snakes, flamingos, and flying skulls. More weapons like firearms, throwing knives, bows and explosives becomes available as the player progress through the game. Weapons and health replenishment items are scarce though, and adds to the challenge.

The game follows the movie "Rambo II" closely, all scenes are represented in some form. The game will end in a climactic battle against a helicopter, requiring ample grenades and health items, and ultimately culminate in a showdown with Murdock. This showdown is symbolically represented by firing a kanji symbol for "anger" that inexplicably transforms him into a frog. It probably focus too much on story, and not the gameplay. Still, "Rambo" offers a peculiar yet engaging side-scrolling action-RPG experience.
