"Intro & Chapter 1: The Lighthouse"—The story begins in 1912 off the coast of Maine as Booker DeWitt is being transported by two mysterious escorts to a unknown lighthouse out at sea. Attached to the door, a cryptic note awaits him that reads, "Bring us the girl and wipe away the debt. This is your last chance!" Searching around inside the lighthouse, Booker finds siver eagle coins (the game's currency) and food items. Dewitt also finds a murder scene, and after ringing the bells attached to the lighthouse door, is ascended some 15,000 feet into the sky.
