Black Myth: Wukong: How to Defeat the Tiger Vanguard Unlock the Rock Solid Spell - Boss Guide
Welcome back, everyone! Today, we’re diving into one of the more challenging encounters in Chapter 2 of Black Myth: Wukong—the Tiger Vanguard. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill fight; the Tiger Vanguard is a fierce opponent found in the Crouching Tiger Temple, and taking him down requires some serious preparation. I suggest you save this battle for later in the chapter after you’ve built up your strength, collected key items, and honed your skills. Even then, don’t be surprised if you find yourself on the receiving end of a few defeats while you learn his attack patterns.
Now, let’s talk strategy. If you’ve taken down the Stone Vanguard first, you’ll have the Galeguard Armor, which is a huge help here. This armor gives you a significant defensive boost, making the Tiger Vanguard’s hits a bit more manageable. But even without it, make sure you’re stocked up on healing items and that your dodging game is on point. After all, dodging effectively can be the difference between life and death in this fight.
The Tiger Vanguard has a unique ability that sets him apart from other bosses: he can turn to stone. When he does this, attacking is useless—your strikes will either bounce off or do no damage at all, and you’ll be left wide open for a counterattack. The key here is patience. Hold off on your attacks, watch his movements, and be ready to dodge when he reanimates. He also has a trick up his sleeve where he creates a stone decoy. It might look like the real deal, but don’t be fooled—it’s just a distraction. The Tiger Vanguard will have teleported to a different spot in the arena and is likely preparing to launch a surprise attack, so stay sharp and keep an eye out for his next move.
In terms of combat style, the Tiger Vanguard is a dual threat with both fists and a sword. His punches come fast and furious, typically in a quick two-hit combo, so be ready to dodge out of the way. His sword strikes are a bit slower and more deliberate, usually coming in a series of three slashes with brief pauses in between. This is your chance to strike—just don’t get greedy. Land a hit or two, then be ready to move again.
If you’re keeping your distance, the Tiger Vanguard has a couple of ranged attacks to watch out for. He might swing his sword and send a wind projectile your way, or he could leap into the air and try to crash down on you. The best way to avoid these attacks? Stay close. Despite his fearsome appearance, staying up close and personal limits his attack options and can cause some of his bigger moves to miss entirely. But don’t rely solely on basic dodging—use Cloud Step to navigate around his more complex attacks. And while blocking might seem like a good idea, it’s not very effective against this boss, so focus on dodging and repositioning instead.
One of the most effective spells you can use in this fight is Immobilize. This will freeze the Tiger Vanguard in place, giving you a brief window to unleash a powerful combo. But remember, Immobilize doesn’t reset his attack animations, so if he’s mid-swing when you cast it, be sure to move out of the way before he reanimates, or you’ll take a hit.
As with any boss in Black Myth: Wukong, taking too many hits will end your attempt quickly. While there might be moments to heal using a strong gourd, especially when the Tiger Vanguard is immobilized or in stone form, it’s far better to focus on evasion. This fight will likely take several attempts as you learn his patterns and develop the muscle memory needed to dodge effectively. It might even take more tries than you expect, but with enough persistence, you’ll get the hang of it and eventually come out on top.
When you finally bring down the Tiger Vanguard, he’ll turn to stone one last time and crumble away. At this point, the headless musician will make a reappearance, returning Sun Wukong’s legendary stone form to the Destined One, and granting you the Rock Solid Spell. This spell is a powerful defensive tool that replaces Cloud Step, allowing you to completely negate an incoming attack when timed correctly. Plus, it’ll stagger your opponent, opening them up for a counterattack.
