Closing thoughts / mini "review"
Our Journey to the West concludes with conflicted feelings!
This game have been a struggle for us on the performance side. We had to start again on PC as console just flat out did not run in a favorable matter for us! We tried on 2 different consoles and same issue on both. It dropped a ton in frames.
Performance issues aside. We still feel this game have some lingering issues gameplay, story and music wise.
We did start to get severely Combat fatigued around chapter 3's ending and nothing much changes from there and out. You get some more spells but the mightiest button in the game is square square square. The dodge feels very responsive and satisfying but the " counter mechanic with triangle on smash stance or the triangle dodge on thrust stance does not feel very rewarding. Unlike other games with a parry / counter mechanic this one will still leave you open for more damage if you counter one hit. So for the most time it's better to not use it and instead cash in the stamina and resources on the fully charged triangle attack for maximum damage. At least that was what we felt was the most effective.
A change that we personally feel would make the battle system better is to make it less stamina hungry. You constantly need to disengage and then engage again.
Add a proper parry mechanic similar to Lies of P. Make it so that when Son spins the staff at the right timing you get a parry. As an example.
A combo to send enemies flying and then engage them in the air. Nothing too fancy but enough to feel like you could use the staff to get up in the air, dish out a few hits and slam them down. This would make it feel much more varied and also probably help with a few of the flying enemies.
The set of spells you get are locked to square, triangle, circle and X. It would be nice to switch these around to create a build to better fit your playstyle.
Speaking on builds. This game have some amazing armour and set builds. The sad part is there is no real incentive or threat in the game that really makes you have to change your build up. Only once did we really have to change and that was against that hardest secret boss where we actually looked up a build that worked better than our own.
Music just does not hit the way we wish it would. This game have some of the highest highs for us but also some of the lowest of lows. For us to get that really hype moments we more or less had to play "DJ" and find other hype battle themes across other games and animes to put on while fighting. We changed the music for several bosses in Chapter 4 and the very last Boss since the music just did not hit for us personally!
The story just feels confusing and very sporadic. It feels like if you've read Journey to the West or watched the adaptations you will have more enjoyment from it. That being said the game is extremely lore rich and there is a ton of reading with all the different characters in the game. We just did not vibe with this choice and stopped reading early on so that is absolutely on us. But Sitting and reading on each and every enemy just did not feel fun or interesting enough.
At its best we feel this could tip over to an 8/10 if they can figure out the performance issues at the very least and get that to be stable 60 fps without having to run a 40's series of Nvidia. Right now it feels more like a 7 to 7,5
But that's just our opinion and experience with the game.
We have played now after this video and our stream around 60 hours on Steam and around 10 or so on PS5.
