Blacklight Retribution-closed beta
5In taking a break from a lot of MMORPG videos lately, I've got 2 coming up from FPS games instead. The first one up is Blacklight Retribution. It's made by Perfect World of Forsaken World/Rusty Hearts fame. It's an FPS game that uses the Unreal engine.
The game reminds me of Brink crossed up something like War Inc. It's your standard die/deploy type FPS game but it promotes a pretty high amount of customization for your guns. You can modify things like the barrel, muzzle, stock, sight and more. Most modifications have a solid effect ont he gun such as rate of fire, damage, spread and the like. The game has a level up system so playing more nets you skills you can buy with your points and deeper upgrades for your gun and armor.
The game does seem fun but it suffers highly from that "wtf I shot him for 15 seconds, he shot me for 2 and I died" syndrome. This is where the comparison to War Inc comes in. Granted I was a level 1-2 running around with some 6-8 level people but it seemed puzzling to whale away on somebody only to be near instakilled in return. The leveling does seem slow at the start as you wallow in the "noob zone" where you don't have a strong enough gun to net you a lot of kills which means a plodding style to leveling. The game is nifty in that you can access terminals during a match and get things like flamethrowers, health restores and even a mech suit.
The range of customization for your avatar is pretty high from the visor right down to the gun and even a dangling trophy. It plays pretty well on high graphics settings but some have said if flows smoother if you tone them down. It's also perhaps the only game since UT99 (and classic dom mods for 2k4 and beyond) that actually has a REAL domination mode in it. So far I've seen domination and team deathmatch. Not sure what others will show up on live play.
