Blackrock and Vanguard loaned out shares they didn't own!
AMC was set up to run in November/December when short interest had been declining, however, Vanguard and BlackRock then sold off substantial amounts of shares that they had loaned out in order to push the price of AMC down further while still benefitting from the short interest fees.
This will shortly be proved by the release of the 13F filings in the next week or two.
There are also a number of HUGE data updates such as other 13F filings (renaissance doubled their position)!
