_______
A boomer shooter is a term used to describe newer FPS games (2010s and later) that are purposely designed to emulate the style of the original FPS games like Doom and Quake, moving away from realism and story and instead emphasizing fast gameplay and over-the-top combat. The term originated following the release of Dusk (2018), with fans of that game quickly coining the term; it has a double meaning in that it references the idea of "boomsticks" (powerful shotguns) that frequently were part of these games' arsenals, and is an ironic reference to the baby boomer generation. Newer triple-A games like Doom (2016) and Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014) helped to repopularize these styles of shooters in the mid-2010s, and indie developers further contributed to the field, including Amid Evil, Ultrakill and Ion Fury.
