Hey there folks, Been awhile since I've been taking it easy lately.

Anyways today we have a true successor to contra aka Blazing Chrome. If Metal Slug & Contra had a baby, then you have Blazing Chrome. I've had this game in my steam library for a good while and decided to finally tackle it, surprisingly it's a very balanced game!

The big difference it has to contra is opposed to aliens, robots now rule over (then you'd have probotector.) The game seems to be more akin to hard corps since you can swap between your weapons (minus the bomb.)

The metal slug aspect is being able to ride mechs and a melee attack when you get close to enemies (similar to the knife in metal slug.)

Plot is pretty simple, the great war between humans and robots broke out and the robots won. Humanity is almost gone and the very few resistance camps are struggling as they try to fend off the toasters. Mavra, a woman fighting for the resistance along with a converted toaster named Doyle are Humanities last hope of survival in ending the war. And so they set out to Blaze some Chrome!

On to the game, It has 3 difficulties and depending on which one you chose, each with their own perks.

Easy won't let you in the leaderboard system but it gives you 7 lives, support capsules, a save system (let's you continue where you left of and even leave stages if you mess up!) and unlimited credits.

Normal removes the support capsules but it lets you join the leaderboard system. You have 5 lives this time, no support capsules but you have unlimited Credits.

Hard gives goes arcade style on you and can only be unlocked by clearing Normal. Support capsules are gone, the save system is gone, you get 3 lives and 3 credits only so it's trial and error now.

The number of enemies increase when you choose a higher difficulty as well, though the game is nice enough to let the player see the ending for all difficulties. Plus all the stages can be accessed any time meaning the difficulty for each level is just right (even though it has a difficulty rating.)

Can't say much about the gameplay, it's pretty spot on. You have a roll mechanic as well which makes you some I-frames until the animation stops.

The new thing about blazing chrome is the support bots kinda similar to the support bots seen in shatterhand (surpisingly the comic/guide that comes with the game confirms it!) Speed bot lets you go faster and double jump, attack bot doubles your firepower, and Defense bot aka the best bot that offers you two free hits.

The only time the game goes contra on you is mission 3 when you enter the bio weapon facility. You fight alien like creatures then back to to the toasters once you beat mission 3.

The only minor complaint I had was the first person shmup segment, it would've been nice if you can bring your shield bots with you.

Once you reach the final stage, it's nice enough to give you some support capsules and an extra life. Once you beat it it then plays a licensed track for the ending called "The Danger" by Kristine.

On to the extras,
There's mirror mode which just mirrors the whole game, it doesn't really change anything, all the stages are just mirrored.

The melee characters/Ninja's have their own unique moveset as well. As the name suggest, they only use melee attacks. They can dash mid-air and also have a strong charge attack. Still, the ninja's are quite difficult to use especially in hard mode. If you want an extra challenge then these characters are just for you.

It has a boss rush mode and gives you all 4 weapons at the start, however die once with the weapon you're holding and it's gone (you don't get it back as well).

There's really not much else I can say, Blazing Chrome is great run n' gun that pays homage to the genre itself. It's got nice pixel art, butter smooth animation, and balanced difficulty. Highly recommend it if you can you're looking for some classic run n' gun action like contra and metal slug!

I'll be doing the other modes as well so stay tuned!

If you like my runs be sure to check out the group I'm in if you want to see us play more good ol fashion retro games!
