Shatterhand (NES) - (No Death | Longplay)
Natsume, honestly I've yet to see a bad title from them. They've had a very solid library for both the NES and SNES each offering fun and unique challenges.
Today we have Shatterhand, for Japan it's known as the toku show Tokkyuu Shirei Solbrain (I'll tackle solbrain another time but I'll talk about the differences here.)
How I found out about this gem is quite a funny story.
I originally thought the game would be bad because of the abysmal box art, then I discovered solbrain on a multicart only to come back to shatterhand.
Box art aside, this game is graphically impressive.
The games plot is in 2030, a renegade group of soldiers called Metal Command led by general Gus Grover set out to take over the world with an army of Cyborg Soldiers. Steve Hermann, a young police officer from the Bronx was fatally injured during a Skirmish which costed him both his arms. Law and Order Regulatory Division (L.O.R.D.) offered him special cybernetic arms and is now tasked to take down Metal Command, his codename, Shatterhand.
The game then shows you an epic intro that showcases Steve's new arms. He deflects all the bullets being shot at him and he counters with an epic punch which also obliterates the soldiers gun, and then the game begins.
The first level starts by showcasing Steve's new arms by having him destroy big metallic pillars with his bare hands.
Anyways on to the gameplay, controls are pretty simple, A jumps and B punches. As you progress each level, enemies will drop coins in which can be spent for upgrades that can be found in every level. The P platform doubls your damage, the red cross is health and EX is for an extra life.
The main gimmick of the game is the support bots, through out the level you'll find crates that can container either a bag of coins, grenades or the power up item. It represents the Alpha and Beta Symbol. You can change the symbol of the item by punching it BUT punch too many items then it will explode and turn into money. Once you've gotten a total of 3 you'll get your support bot that will help you throughout the stage. There are about 8 combinations but I highly recommend you just stick with grenade bot since it deals a good amount of damage and has more range. Another neat thing about the power ups is that if you collect the same bot combination twice, you'll turn into a robot equipped with a short ranged but powerful blast for a limited time. The timer will decreased however if you take damage!
Still, the support bots help a lot because the bosses can get frustrating and tedious without them, in this case, the Area E boss can end your run if you weren't able to bring a support bot with you.
The game has a total of 7 area's each with their own unique environment. All the levels are pretty fun, the only challenging levels would be Area F and the final area. It ranges from a factory, an underwater submarine, a military camp in the artic, a hidden camp in the caves and the burning city. The final stage on the other hand takes place in a missile base in which our hero has to go through the stage and the previous bosses. Once you reach the top of the missile, you then face off with grover.
The final boss is a huge push over if you manage to bring your robot suit, have a good support bot and also have double the damage. The game ends with our hero delivering the final blow, escapes the camp then looks to the player with a smile.
The games music is pretty rad but I still prefer Solbrain's version of Area C, that's about the only difference for both games. Area C and it's track was altered for shatterhand. It's also graphically impressive since stages have parallax scrolling.
Excluding the games horrendous box art, this game is a really fantastic platformer. It's got fun challenge and good music, the levels are pretty forgiving too since it offers upgrades along the way. Bit of a shame this game isn't available in switch online, Shadow of the Ninja and S.C.A.T. are there but shatterhand is nowhere to be seen.
If you like my runs be sure to check out the group I'm in if you want to see us play more good ol fashion retro games!
