This is part 2 of the tutorial showing you how to make a sophisticated and professional dynamic Pirate"s Flag cloth simulation quickly and easily using Blender. Let"s get started

I want the flag to collide with itself as well, so I "ll come down to the Cloth Collision pulldown and check the self-collision checkbox.

I might want to add some directional force to the flags animation and I"ll do that by adding a wind field to our flag. Come up to the Add menu set and down to Force Field and select Wind. Wind is a global force so no matter where you place the icon in the view, the effect is the same. This is not tru of all forces however. Lets set the wind strength to 175 and introduce some randomness by setting the noise value to 3 and resimulate.

This is starting to look really nice. I am not feeling enough randomness in the flag motion so I am going to add an additional Turbulence force. Come up to Add / Force Field / Turbulence. I"ll set the strength 500 with a noise value of 10. Lets see how that affects the behaviour of the flag.

It still looks abit heavy, so II"ll select the flag mesh and in the Navigator I"ll select the Physics tab, and under the cloth pulldown, I"ll set the Mass of the cloth to .3 to make it a bit lighter feeling. Let"s take another look at the simulation.
That is really looking alot more natural and we are getting some really sophisticated dynamic motion here on the tatters.

Alright, you may have noticed some creasing or faceting on our flag mesh as it simulates. I"ll take care of that now by adding a subdivision surface modifier to our flag by selecting the flag mesh and coming over to the Navigator and over to the Object Modifier Tab, and to the Add modifier pulldown and selecting the subD surface modifier.

You can instantly see the refinement of the mesh in the viewport. I am going to set the subdivision level in the viewport to 2...3 may crash some machines, and 4...well...just save your file before trying it. Now I"ll render a frame to show you that this has no effect on the render, this is just for the viewport display. To refine the rendering subdivisions, adjust the value here under Render.
