Blind Play My Way: Final Fantasy 4, Part 60 - Last Call For Sanity
Alternate title: "Fuck Square's Balls".
Continued from Part 60
- The rows thing is a 50/50 shot, honestly. It generally just works out, to be honest; given the enforced parties I've seen so far in the game, which I doubt will suddenly change in time for the final dungeon I feel sure I must be closing in on, this system works out since I've never been in a position of having more than three mages or meleers at a time. So while in any other FF game, this would bug the hell outta me, here it works out. I'm not the biggest fan of constant forced party structure for the entirety of a game (I'm looking at YOU, FF13! Argh!), but in this case, it works out well enough. My favorite two characters are still here now, and the party is still balanced enough in terms of mages and meleers. That's all I could ask for. So the rows are just fine to me. I still prefer to make my own party order, but given that's purely aesthetics and basically affects nothing in combat, it's not a loss I'll make a real fuss about.
- Inventory space this limited is not something I'm a big fan of either, but it didn't become a problem that often, and the Fat Chocobo, while not always convenient, at least made things manageable. (However, the ugly Magnetic Cave incident could have ALL been avoided if it weren't for that bologna...but at least that was just a one-time problem that I somehow still survived.)
- And this is kind of a personal thing, but, random variance felt ridiculous at a few points...
To be honest, should FF4 DS work out the things I take issue with in the SNES version, shoot, I may fully embrace the (attempted or successful) difficulty spikes and end up saying "This still feels easier! At least I feel like I have real control over my party, not just praying the next person in line is who I need rather than wasting time telling a meleer 'no stop, skip your turn, I NEED MY WHITE MAGE, LET ME HAVE ROSA'S TURN ALREADY DAMMIT' or something."
But at the end of the day, I suppose this amounts to nothing more than the ravings of a certifiably insane RPGist that is jaded... I can't say I'm a veteran, I guess, but I also can't say I'm a newbie either. 7 was my first FF game, between the time FF8 came out and the time FF9 came out. I'm not old school enough to be called a vet, but I'm not stupid enough to say "3D games are better, 2D sucks". (I still fully embrace FF6, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger... Especially since Secret of Mana was my first RPG, I believe even before Pokémon came out and dominated my life for so many years, heh.) So where does that place me? Honestly, Luna only knows. I'm just somewhere in between. But I still have my opinions, and here they are. Listen to or discard them, whatever you like. I think that I've basically said my piece, at this point. Take it as you will...
