Hey friends, today we're breaking apart Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo. In this video, I go to Star World 3 and do a few assorted glitches to get us started.

First, I despawn the Lakitu by hitting the sprite limit for the level. The game can only have 8 sprites loaded at once. I fill the sprite slots with the following 8 sprites: Lakitu, Lakitu's Cloud, Yoshi, Keyhole, P-Switch, 1-Up, Spiney and Spiney II. You can see they are all full when the Lakitu tries to throw another Spiney, but he is unable. When I scroll the goal tape on screen, the game knows it is important from a special flag set on it and that it must spawn, so it despawns the Lakitu to free up the slot. The cloud will never despawn like it normally would because of the weird way the Lakitu was removed.

Next, I duplicate the key block. The way the game knows what is in a block with the key block ID is based on the X position of the block. It takes the X position and does a modulo 4 on it to get a number between 0 and 3. Based on this number, it will either spawn a key, Yoshi wings, a balloon or a koopa shell. The key happens to be between the koopa shell and the wings. I dupe a block to either side using a trick where you kick an object up through a block as you are jumping next to it, duplicating the block. Depending on how far you stand away from the block and when you throw the item, you will duplicate it either above, to the left or right, or diagonally up and left/right of the original block. I spawn a koopa shell and wings this way, although the shell doesn't seem to appear right away. I hit the block again later with the P-Switch on Yoshi's tongue and it appears.

The third glitch involves winning the game while dead. If there is a key in Yoshi's mouth and his sprite passes through a keyhole during the death animation, he will activate the keyhole and complete the secret exit for the level. This is the only way I know of to win a level while dead.
