Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain has been living rent-free in my head for pushing 30 years now. But why? It’s a solid game, but not a great from a mechanical standpoint. What is it about the adventures of deceased nobleman-turned vampiric menace Kain that resonates so much with me, and makes it a game I find easy to recommend all these years later?
It’s the violence. But not in a Mortal Kombat ‘woo look at them guts!’ way - it’s a gory killathon wrapped around an utterly sinister and thoroughly uncaring core. Nosgoth is a dark world; Nihilism given geographical form. And it’s because of that, that the first Legacy of Kain game stands out above others from the series such as Soul Reaver and Legacy of Kain: Defiance. Here’s some words from me on why I feel that way.
