There is an enemy icon button that can be clicked and you'll see what enemy attack and defense types available in the map. You can prepare your team ahead of time to easily counter the defense types of the enemy.
General Idea is Same Color Attack EFFECTIVE AGAINST Same Color Defense
* Explosion (Red Attack/Sword) EFFECTIVE AGAINST Light Armor (Red Defense/Armor)
* Penetration (Yellow Attack/Sword) EFFECTIVE AGAINST Heavy Armor (Yellow Defense/Armor)
* Mystic (Blue Attack/Sword) EFFECTIVE AGAINST Special Armor (Blue Defense/Armor)
There's resistances too but the basics are simple (think triangle form):
* Explosion (Red Attack) RESISTED BY (deals less DMG) Special Armor (Blue Defense)
* Penetration (Yellow Attack) RESISTED BY Light Armor (Red Defense)
* Mystic (Blue Attack) RESISTED BY Heavy Armor (Yellow Defense)
There's also Purple Attack (Destruction) and Purple Defense (Structure). It's weak against it's same color and resist on everything else. (You'll see the chart in the video).
Enemies in story have specific Colored Armor Type but most of them have NORMAL attack (i.e. neutral damage regardless of what tank you use).
In early chapters (Area 1 and 2), many enemies are Light Armor. At Chapter 3, you see a mix of Light and Heavy Armor. In Chapter 4, you see Heavy Armor. A lot of the "tier lists" that put high ratings on Explosion Attack Type units is likely due to this kind of experience early game in which case Explosion Attack types deal "super effective" ('weak') and 'normal' and no 'resist' against most of the early game enemies.
If you pull Mystic Attack Types, don't worry. Later on we should see more enemies where they'll be effective against.
Playing through Attack/Defense advantages allow you to clear story stages even while underleveled and not having great units pulled.
