Let's face it - as gamers, and as human beings in general, we face randomness day in and day out. By definition it cannot be controlled, and keeps us all on our collective toes. Few things split gamers more than random chance, however. It's great to have to help keep a game versitile, fun, and replayable, but can end up being so overwhelming that actually playing a game ceases to be fun, and everything comes down to a coin flip in the end.

Randomness in games is a spectrum, and here I discuss it a bit, with three main categories - games that are completely random, games that have no random aspects, and games that have randomness, but utilize specialized mechanics to mitigate random outcomes to an extent. All three categories are potentially fun, but represent a unique balance between player decision and gameplay.

As always, though, the most important thing is what YOU all think about this. What's your approach to randomness? What are your favorite games in each of these major categories? Let me know any and all thoughts in the comments below!
