Those Leveneubas are nasty.
This story is so, so cliché. Noble, righteous, selfless heroes face cruel, selfish villains commanding an army of demons. The villains’ goal is to attain ultimate power. Fortunately, with friendship and teamwork, the forces of good defeat the evil, selfish, cruel bad guys and stop the demons. I don’t think any other video game I’ve played since this has been anywhere near as boring.
The greatest sin of Ys Origin is that its story is not only cliché and borderline filler, but it’s also elaborate and unnecessarily detailed. There are many lengthy cutscenes, explaining details of life and culture and bits of the heroes’ backstories that really teach us nothing. Insipid but also long.
Well, except for the idea that demons are somehow a reflection of humanity’s sins, as Dalles posits near the end, though the idea doesn’t really come through in the game.
Though who knows. Maybe the other two routes reveal that the story is much more complex. Like Hatoful Boyfriend, it could reveal an unexpectedly great story. But I don’t care to check.
