Boktai: The Sun Is in Your Hand - Part 1/5 - Game Boy Advance - ボクらの太陽 - May the Sun Be With Us!
The entire gimmick of the Boktai franchise is that the cartridges had solar sensors on them. In an attempt to get kids to play outside more (with the original GBA screen, can you imagine?), most of your weapons could only work by using solar energy that was stored in your battery. To stream this game, I used the GameCube's Game Boy Player and jammed it in my window. It worked well enough, but I never got much more than a few bars at once, even when it was super sunny. But I played at night once, and realized that the game would give you sun fairies (or whatever they're called) to recharge. So it's not entirely impossible to play without the sun, even though the experience will be better under sun rays.
As a game, Boktai is very heavily puzzle oriented. You go through a series of mini-dungeons which all contain puzzles and you fight enemies with your weapons along the way. There are no experience points for your main character, only for your guns. Some enemies are weaker to some weapons and resistant to others. Then, you have a main dungeon that contains a boss (an Immortal) which when defeated will unlock a new area on the map. Speaking of which, having to carry the boss's casket all the way back to the entrance of the dungeons is something I could have done without, but it does add an interesting backtracking element to the game.
After clearing the final boss, I tried going back to reach the extra dungeons, but accidentally made my GC drop on the floor, ending my play session rather abruptly. I stopped there. So the bonus dungeons are not showcased in this playthrough. I'm not sure Boktai could be considered an action RPG like the Japanese box claims it is, but it's definitely an action puzzle game. Oh, and the game was produced by Hideo Kojima, who also produced and directed Metal Gear Solid, of course. I will definitely be playing the sequels!
