My longest video on Youtube - 3 hours of trolling :))
-------
Bonkheads is a platform game very similar to the popular Mario Bros Arcade. It was released on both the Mac and the PC. The MAC version was released by Aspyr and the PC version by 1AM. The two releases are not completely identical, as the PC version lacks some features of the Mac game, such as network play, which means that 2 players have to share the same keyboard, or connect a second keyboard to the PC if you want to play the 2-player mode. Another feature of the Mac version is the ability to design your own custom levels using the included "Bonkreator" tool. On to the game itself: like Mario Bros Arcade, you take control of two troll brothers: Grag, the green troll and Thog, the blue troll. In single player mode you can only play as Grag. In a 2-player game you each conTROL a troll at the same time :)) The trolls can bump into each other and even stand on top of one another. This gives you the option of playing either cooperatively and help each other out as a team, or competitively, where you try to sabotage and kill each other as much as possible, by pushing them into hazards and snatching 1-UPs before the other one does. There IS a way to play as just Thog in a 1-player game too, by holding down the "~" key while clicking on the 1-player option, but it only seems to work in the PC version, that's why I couldn't play as Thog in the Mac version here. I guess one way to play as Thog by yourself would be to start a 2-player game and just let Grag die, since the game doesn't end even when one troll runs out of lives, but it's pretty stupid having to do that. I really think there should be an option to select who you want to play as in a 1-player game - something like "select character" or "choose your hero". It doesn't matter at all who you choose, because outside their different appearance, the two trolls are identical. The goal is to eliminate all the living critters running around in each level. There are 12 different worlds, with different themes and 6 levels each, the last one being a boss fight, for a total of 144 levels to clear, which is quite a lot ! Once you finish all 12 worlds in order, you go through all of them again in random order. Every 6th level you fight a boss character, which involves bumping them from underneath several times to finish them off, like all the other pests. The bosses are Shrew-Man-Chew (the rat sorcerer), T. Wrecks (a dinosaur) and D. Evil (the Devil himself). Each boss shows up 4 worlds in a row, so you fight Shrew in levels 6, 12 and 18 (worlds 1,2,3,4), T.Wrecks in levels 24, 30 and 36 (worlds 5,6,7,8) and so on. Every time you meet them they get faster, more aggressive and take more hits to defeat. Like in Mario Bros Arcade, there is a "POW" block, in this case the TNT box, placed somewhere random on screen, which knocks out all the pests on screen at once. Be careful, because the explosion also wakes up any creatures that were already knocked out prior to hitting the box. Pests that are not touching a platform when you hit the TNT box will not be affected, so if there are a lot of creatures that hop around like raptors and bees, chances are the explosion won't get them all, so you'll have to do it the traditional way. You can hit the TNT box 3 times in a row before it disappears and must be replenished. You refill the TNT box when one of the trolls collects a gem called "Blastidian", a green gem with a stick of dynamite on it. You don't find these lying everywhere so use the dynamite sparingly ! You uncover gems by bonking random blocks. Other gems you come across are:
- "Adrenalin" a blue gem with a rabbit symbol which temporarily makes the troll who picks it up run faster
- "Tranquilium" a red gem with a turtle symbol which slows the pests down for a while
- "Densidian" (the only gem with a negative effect) a blue gem with the symbol of a black scale weight on it. It temporarily makes your troll heavier so he can't jump as high (unless you grab it in the underwater stages - it makes no difference then, because water makes you float when you jump)
- "Moolamite" a yellow gem with a dollar bill symbol which grants the troll 5k points (10k points gives you an extra life, by the way, so grabbing another gem like this gives you a 1-UP right away)
- "Resurrectite" the blue gem with a "1UP" symbol which is self-explanatory
Amazingly, even though the game is nothing more than 100+ levels of the same screen more or less, there's only one soundtrack and you're doing the same thing over and over again, the overall fast-paced nature of the game and the sheer number of different level layouts keep it from becoming boring, especially if play with a friend. Try it, I guarantee you will be hooked !
